The literary elements poster is a creative way for students to show understanding of theme, symbols, mood and point of view. In addition, students can present the poster to the class.
Before Assigning the Poster
Collect materials for the project. Students will need colored pencils, markers, old magazines, scissors, glue sticks, rulers, poster board and/or a large piece of construction paper.
In addition, students need to understand the literary elements and be able to identify them in their novels. Begin by giving examples.
Understanding Theme
The theme is the big idea of the novel, which is universal to all cultures and is timeless. It sometimes can be the "moral of the story" or a lesson to be learned. Themes are classic ideas that usually focus on human nature, the ideals of society or general lessons about life. For example, a few examples of theme are the great journey, growing up, friendship, etc.
Identifying Mood, Symbols and Point of View
Mood is the way the reader is affected or how he or she feels when reading the book. The setting, theme, and tone can help create the mood. For example, there can be a mood of mystery, excitement, uncertainty, etc.
A symbol is an object or thing that stands for something else and can have multiple meanings. For example, an eagle can symbolize freedom and power.
Point of view is who or what character is telling the story. There are several types of point of view, such as first person where the narrator uses "I"; second person where the narrator uses "you" and third person where the narrator uses "he", "she" or "it."
Directions for Poster
After students understand the four literary elements, begin instructing students on how to create the poster.
Step 1 – Tell students to select a novel that they have recently read.
Step 2 – Ask students to identify the theme, mood, symbol and point of view for their novels.
Step 3 – Direct students to place the title of the book, author, and four literary elements and examples on the poster. The poster should be neat, colorful and interesting. A picture or drawing should be included for each literary element on the poster.
Step 4 – Assign dates for students to present their posters to the class. The presentation can be assessed with a rubric.
This is a great way for students to show their understanding of the four literary elements. In addition, they are able to be creative and present their findings to the class.
