Place value rounding is an engaging activity to reinforce math skills. Rounding skills to the nearest ten, hundred, or thousand can be strengthened with fun card games.

Rounding is a mathematical skill introduced in the primary grades and becomes a lifelong skill for all students. The objective of rounding is to make the number easier to understand.

After teaching the rounding concept, reinforce the skill by giving students ample opportunities to practice. Playing place value card games is a wonderful activity for students to participate in during the rounding lessons and throughout the year.

Rounding to the Nearest 100 Card Game

Number of Players: 2

Materials

  • deck of cards with all face cards and tens removed from the deck
  • ace will represent the face value of 1

Instructions

  • Shuffle the deck and place the deck face down on the playing surface.
  • A player turns over three cards and places them face up on the playing surface.
  • Players read the cards from left to right. It is important for players to read the numbers correctly. (Cards read 568 from left to right, however it reads 865 from right to left which dramatically changes the number)
  • First player to round to the closest 100 wins the hand.
  • If the first player to round gives an incorrect answer the other player can steal by answering correctly. Teacher or another student may need to verify the answer.
  • Play continues until all cards have been played.
  • Winner is the player with the most cards at the end of the game.

Variation

Rounding to the nearest 100 game can be changed to rounding to the nearest 10, nearest 1000, nearest 10 000 or other number.

Greatest Number After Rounding

Number of Players: 2 or more

Materials

  • deck of cards with all face cards and tens removed from the deck
  • ace will represent the face value of 1

Instructions

  • Shuffle the deck and give each player 3 cards .
  • Players arrange the cards to create the greatest number.
  • Each player rounds the card to the nearest 100.
  • Players show their hands and must verbally tell the group the new number rounded to the nearest hundred.
  • The player who has the highest whole number wins the round.
  • If there is a tie, cards are divided among the winners for the round.
  • If one of the player gives an incorrect answer another player can steal by answering correctly. Player can steal after an answer is given. Teacher or another student may need to verify the answer.
  • Play continues until all cards have been played.
  • Player with the most cards at the end of the game is the winner.

Variation

Change the objective to least number after rounding. As well, rounding to whole numbers can be by tens, hundreds, thousands or other.

Rounding whole numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, or other is a difficult concept for some students to grasp. However, a simple card game of place value rounding gives students an opportunity to master this mathematical concept.
