Completing worksheets on the eight parts of speech can be down right boring. Add pizazz to the lesson by turning this mundane task into a game. Students will work in large and small groups. In the end, they will be assessed individually.

Goal: Students will learn the eight parts of speech and be able to sort and identify words as a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun, preposition, pronoun or interjection.

Materials needed: card stock, poster board, Post Its and/or large sheets of paper

Pre-Assess Eight Parts of Speech

Step 1 -- Pre-assess what students know. First, place 8 large pieces of paper or posters around the room. On each poster, write one of the eight parts of speech: noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun, preposition, conjunction, and interjection.

Give each student eight Post It notes or cards with tape. Tell students to write one word per Post It: foot, jump, soft, quickly, to, and, wow, and her. Now, give the students one minute to place all eight words on the large papers and sit down.

Teach Basic Definitions for Parts of Speech

Step 2 – Discuss what happened. Did students place the words on the right papers? If not, discuss what was right and what was wrong.

If students are not clear about the basic definitions of the eight parts of speech, take some time to discuss them. The PPST website has many activities to refresh their memories or to teach them the basics about the eight parts of speech.

Practice Identifying Words in Small Groups

Step 3 – Once students understand the basic definitions, put them into groups of three or four students. Give each group a large poster. It needs to be divided into eight sections and labeled with the eight parts of speech. Give them a sheet with words on it that need to be cut out and placed in the right sections. The first team to complete the poster correctly can win a small prize. The team members need to wok together. All teams must complete the activity. Make them work together until each team places all of the words in the correct columns.

Suggested words for activity: (nouns) finger, hair, shoe, (prepositions) on, around, for (interjections) hello, ouch, oh (pronouns) it, she, him, (adjectives) purple, fuzzy, hard (verbs) walk, skip, swim (adverbs) softly, hardly, very, (conjunctions) or, but, and

Individually Assess Identification of Parts of Speech

Step 4 – Individually assess that the students know how to identify the eight parts of speech. Give each student two sheets of paper. On one sheet, they must make eight columns and label them with the eight parts of speech from memory. The second sheet should have a list of words that they need to sort into the eight categories and write them in the correct columns.

This lesson is fun because students are working in teams, and it is hands-on. Not only will they learn how to identify the eight parts of speech, they will work on cooperative learning skills as well.
