Character Profile PosterStudents Show Understanding of Character with Poster
Assess student knowledge of characters from assigned novels through posters that can be designed like a Facebook or MySpace web page.
Students can spend hours designing a social networking web page about themselves. Allow them to use this new knowledge and creativity to design a poster that is in the same style as a Facebook or a Myspace web page for a character from a novel. Information for PosterStudents need to brainstorm information for the character's profile and poster in general. For example, student should make a list of where the character lives, his or her age, place of birth, and where the character works and/or goes to school. In addition, students should make a list of favorite and/or least favorite music, food, hobbies, activities, sports, movies, television shows, colors, clothes, cars, etc. Last, students should make a list of friends, enemies, family members, and co-workers. Part of this poster will require quotes from the character and quotes about the character made by other characters in the novel. Students need to find a quote to place on the poster that shows the "essence" of the character. Then, they need to find at least three more quotes about the character made by other characters in the novel. The page numbers should be included with the quotes. Materials NeededSince most schools block these types of sites, the poster will be made instead of an actual web page. However, the layouts used on the web can be inspiration for the posters. Students will need to find pictures for the poster. They can search the web or old magazines for pictures of what the character would look like. Or, the students can draw the pictures. In addition, students will need markers, colored pencils, poster board, stickers, rulers, scissors, etc. Making the Myspace or Facebook Style PosterThe character that students decide to use for the poster can come from a class assigned novel or a student choice novel. The character's name should be displayed prominently on the poster along with the title of the book and the author. Other sections of the poster could be the character's interests, friends from the novel, comments left by other characters in the novel, additional pictures of the character, etc. All information listed on the poster should be correct about the character. The poster should include at least five messages left by other characters in the novel. At least two-to-three of these should be direct quotes from the novel with page numbers. Other messages could be ones created by the student. However, the comments should be relevant to the character's personality and the character who leaves the message. Another idea is to leave a section on the poster where other students can leave messages if the posters are displayed in the classroom. As always, ask students to use school appropriate language. This is a fun way to assess student knowledge of a character from a novel. Many students will enjoy this project because they can use their web layout skills in class.
